Nature And Wildlife

The county of Angus, and Tayside generally, has a tremendous variation in geography. Within a very short space of time you can go along the coast with its quaint old villages such as Auchmithie (where the Arbroath Smokie was developed) then over rolling rich farmland of the Vale of Strathmore, to the picturesque, and often dramatic, mountains and glens of the foothills of the Grampian Mountains (the Angus Glens).

There are beautiful car tours you can take in this area which are detailed on our Things To Do pages. You can see wildlife on any of these trips but if you want some specific places for visitors to experience some of our wildlife and nature then here is a list that may interest you.

Montrose Basin is a tidal basin which is home to thousands of sea birds, waders and ducks. In the winter it is a stopping place for over 50,000 pink-footed geese. The Basin is managed by The Scottish Wildlife Trust and has a visitor centre.

Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve is on the east coast of Scotland, just between Carnoustie and St Andrews in Fife. The nature reserves are recognised internationally for their very special habitats and for the rich variety of plants, birds, insects and other animals which they support. Walk along the beach to Tentsmuir Point and you may see hundreds of seals basking on the sandbars.
